Can a Dash Cam Record Front and Rear Video at the Same Time?

Yes! Many dash cams have an additional video input for connecting a rear camera that can be mounted to the rear windshield. The benefit of having a single dash camera that monitors both front and rear simultaneously is that each recording event will have two videos linked – one for the front camera and one for the rear.

While many dash cameras sell the rear camera separately, Momento Dash Camera systems include both front and rear cameras so that you instantly have full surveillance coverage around your vehicle. That means that whenever Momento Dash Camera starts recording, it will automatically activate both cameras.

How to View Front and Rear Video from a Momento Dash Camera

Because Momento dash cameras record front and rear video simultaneously, video files must be viewed using specific software. Thankfully, Momento offers multiple free options for viewing, downloading, and sharing your video.

Momento M7 (MD-7205) Viewer

1. M7 Smartphone App – The MD-7205 features a free smartphone app for iPhones and Androids. The Momento app serves as the hub for viewing and editing video files, as well as configuring your MD-7205 dash cam. You can connect your smartphone to your Momento MD-7205 by connecting to the camera’s local wi-fi network.
2. M7 Desktop Viewer App – The M6 also has a desktop viewer for PC and Mac.
3. VLC Media Player – VLC is a third-party software for viewing AVI files with multiple channels.
4. Lastly, if you cannot access/download this software, you can always pull the video files directly off of your Momento dash cam’s micro-SD card

Can the MD-7205 Record When Your Car is Not Running?

Yes, the Momento MD-7205 can record activity around your vehicle even while your vehicle’s engine is not running. This is thanks to a feature called “Parking mode”.

Parking mode allows your dash cam to continue recording even when the engine is turned off. This feature is particularly useful for those who park their cars in public places or areas where theft or vandalism may be a concern.

Important Note: Parking mode features are only available if your dash camera is hardwired to your vehicle’s battery. Dash cams that are plugged into the 12V accessory outlet (aka cigarette lighter adapter) or OBD-II ports generally do not remain powered when the vehicle’s engine is off. Thus, if you are interested in parking mode, please make sure you have a dash cam professionally installed and hardwired to your vehicle.

How Parking Mode Works on Momento Dash Cams

Momento dash cams, like the M7 or M6, have parking mode enabled by default. While the engine is off, Momento cameras do remain active, but do not store video until an event occurs.

There are multiple ways that events are triggered on Momento dash cams:

1. Motion detection mode, which triggers the camera to start recording when it detects any movement around the car. Motion events can be triggered by either the front or rear camera.
2. Impact detection mode, which is the most advanced type of parking mode. This mode uses sensors to detect any impact or collision with the car This is the most effective way to ensure that any incidents involving your parked vehicle are captured on camera.
3. Eco parking mode, which is only available on the Momento M7. This mode works just like motion detection mode, but utilizes a radar sensor instead of the camera’s image sensor, resulting in a 90% reduction in current draw from your battery. At this time, Eco parking mode events can only be triggered by the M7 front camera.

One great thing about Momento dash cams is that parking mode recordings start 15 seconds before the event occurred – and 15 seconds afterwards. That way, you can clearly see what happened leading up to and following the event.

Use Parking Mode to Report Break-ins or Hit-and-Runs

There is no worse feeling than returning to your car, only to find that it has fallen victim to a hit-and-run or break-in. Thankfully, Momento dash cameras can help make the recovery process much easier.

Parking Mode Events Activate All Cameras

Unlike many of our competitors, parking mode events can be triggered by all of the cameras connected to your Momento system. Furthermore, parking mode recordings will activate all of your cameras, regardless of which camera triggered the event.

All Momento dash cameras include a front and rear camera, giving you up to 270º degrees of surveillance coverage.

If you have the Momento M7, you can also add the Momento IC6 Interior Camera as a third camera so that you can record what happens inside of your vehicle while it is parked. This can provide vital evidence in the event of a break-in or rideshare incident.

Will a Dash Cam with Parking Mode Drain My Vehicle’s Battery?

Momento dash cams have programmable voltage thresholds, which will automatically shut the camera off if your vehicle’s battery is dying. With this feature in place, you can have peace of mind that your Momento dash camera will not completely drain your vehicle’s battery.

With that said, it is important to understand that your vehicle’s battery recharges with driving activity. If your vehicle is parked for an extended period of time, your battery may not be generating sufficient voltage to power your Momento dash cam to activate parking mode.

M7 Eco Parking Mode

The Momento M7’s parking mode has been revamped. The M7 dash camera now offers an Eco Mode where the camera will draw 90% less power from the car battery while in parking mode to help preserve the battery’s charge. With the previous M6 dash camera system, the camera would pull around 250mA while in parking mode. With the new M7 and its Eco parking mode, it will pull around 28mA from the car battery. The chart below will show the current draw for both the M6 and M7 systems.

M7 Radar Detection

While the M6 system is in parking mode, it will only record if something were to trip the camera’s built in shock sensor or motion sensor. With the M7 system, it will still have shock detection but now offers radar detection. With radar detection, the M7 will measure objects within a 5-7 meter distance in relation to the camera. The rear camera will not have radar detection but will detect motion.

The radar detection will have 100° of horizontal field of view and 40° of vertical field of view. Please see the graphic below. Once the M7 detects a change in the distance of an object, the camera will start recording on all cameras that are connected.

When the eco mode is active, the M7 will enter a standby mode when the vehicle’s engine is off to lower the power consumption. When the engine is off, the M7 camera will still continually measure distance between the camera and the objects in front of it that are within range; all while performing on extremely low power. Once the camera finishes a parking mode recording, the camera will go back into standby mode; unless there’s continuous motion detected by radar.

When eco mode is off, the camera will essentially continuously record parking footage until the camera reaches the battery level threshold. The battery level threshold is a setting where you can set the M7 camera to shut off if the car battery gets too low. For example, you can set the battery level threshold for 12.0 volts. If the car battery drops to 12.0 volts, the M7 camera will automatically shut off so that it does not kill the car battery.
