MOUNTING TIPS

When inserting the screws into the underside of the mount, do yourself a favor and lay a towel across the bike under the mount, so if you do drop a screw, you won’t lose it (ask me how I know :- )

Additionally, when tightening the Allen screws that hold the two pieces together, we recommend that you tighten them only snug enough to lock the parts together – DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THESE SCREWS. We have never seen these screws back out on their own when tightened to a snug fit.

If you overtighten these screws, they may “bite” into the brass inserts enough that you run the risk of spinning the inserts in the upper mount on removal.

USE OF THREADLOCKER

We do not recommend the use any type of thread locker on the stainless screws that hold the mount in place due to the tendency of the brass inserts embedded into the upper mount to spin on removal.

USE THREADLOCKER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

AIR DIVERTER “KICKSTAND” BLOCKS

The two-piece blocks we provide will insert between the legs of the diverter in the up position. The parts are designed to only work in one orientation – the larger FEMALE parts insert from the outside into the trough between the legs and the smaller MALE plugs will insert into them from underneath the diverter, trapping the legs between the inner and outer parts.

Blocks are labeled LEFT & RIGHT and will only install on the correct orientation.

ACETONE SMOOTHING

Since these parts are made from ABS plastic, they will respond very well to acetone smoothing, which is the process of using acetone vapors in a sealed container to smooth the outer layer of the 3-D printed parts. What happens is that the acetone vapors actually melt the outer layer of the part, and when removed from the vapor bath, the parts cures into a high gloss smooth finish.

This process not only improves the look of the parts, but increases strength and makes them more weather-resistant and less prone to absorbing oils or other contaminants. We have had fantastic luck using the acetone smoothing method outlined below and it results in an almost injection molded appearance to the part. There are dozens of videos on You Tube showing various methods of acetone vapor smoothing, so if you want to use another method, check them out.

NOTE: WE CANNOT REPLACE PARTS RENDERED INOPERATIVE DUE TO YOUR USE OF THIS MODIFICATION.

THE PROCESS DESCRIBED BELOW SHOULD BE DONE OUTDOORS OR IN A WELL VENTILATED SPACE!

ACETONE FUMES ARE EXPLOSIVE AND TOXIC!

USE THIS METHOD AT YOUR OWN RISK!

THE METHOD DESCRIBED HERE WILL WORK ON ABS FILAMENT ONLY!

PARTS REQUIRED:

• Acetone
• Large glass, metal or plastic (polypropylene only) container with lid
• Small glass or metal bowl (for the acetone)
• Small non-plastic “pedestal” for the bowl – to raise it off the bottom of the container
• Paper towels
• Magnets (if using a ferrous metal container)
• Timer

VAPOR PROCESS:

This method of smoothing relies on the chamber holding the parts being evenly saturated with acetone vapor, which requires a sealed container, so making sure the lid fits tight without any air gaps is important. Additionally, since the acetone vapor is twice as heavy as air, placing the acetone container above the parts is important – this will insure that any vapors generated will sink to the bottom and rise to the level of the acetone container. If your part is below the acetone, it will be evenly affected by the vapor.

Pour 1-2″ of acetone in the bowl and place the bowl on the pedestal in the bottom of the large container.

Take two paper towels and roll them up to form a “wick” – this will provide more surface area to generate vapors

Wet the paper towels in acetone, then place the bottoms of the paper towels in the bowl of acetone (to act like a wick in a candle), and use small magnets or other method to prop up the paper towels high on the wall of the large container. DO NOT ALLOW ANY ACETONE TO DRIP ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER OR ONTO THE PARTS! Consider using a platform of some type on the bottom of the container to raise the parts slightly so that if any acetone does drip, it will not contact your parts.

Place your parts on your platform in the bottom of the container, being careful not to let them touch each other, as they will weld themselves together in this process if they do!

Once the parts are in place, put the lid on the container and set your timer for 1 3/4 to 2 hours. DO NOT OPEN THE CONTAINER UNTIL THEY HAVE SOAKED AT LEAST 1:45!

After an hour and 45 minutes, open the lid and check to see if all the surfaces of your part are beginning to look evenly shiny. If not, put the lid back on and wait another 15 minutes.

At the 2 hour mark, check the parts again – they should be evenly covered in a slight shine. They will look pretty terrible at this point, but don’t despair – the magic will happen soon!

Remove the bowl of acetone at this point – DO NOT DRIP ACETONE ON OR TOUCH THE PARTS WITH YOUR FINGERS!

Leave the lid off the container and ventilate the area.

IMPORTANT – DO NOT TOUCH THE PARTS FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES!

After at least 30 minutes have passed, LIGHTLY touch the part to insure it is not sticky to the touch. Remove the parts ONLY if they are not sticky.

Do not mount anything to the part (Go Pro slide mount, 1/4-20 accessories, etc.) for 18-24 hours – it takes that long for the plastic to fully cure.

After 24 hours, check the fit of your camera mount on the part – the Go Pro slide mount “sometimes” feels a little tighter and may require more force to seat it properly due to the melting of the surfaces around the quick release, but sliding the quick release in and out of the mount a few times is usually enough to bring it back to spec. If the corners of the groove have rounded due to the melting, you can use a small file or sharp chisel to sharpen them up again.

Once cured, your part should look like it came out of an injection mold!

If you want to print your own kickstand parts to allow the air diverter to stay up regardless of how heavy your camera/GPS/phone holder is, you can print two different versions of the kickstand:

BLOCK STYLE	WISHBONE STYLE
This version includes a total of four pieces that install in the gap between the legs of the diverter. The outer pieces will sit in the gap between the legs and inner piece slides in with a smooth friction fit to lock them in. Makes the diverter ROCK SOLID in the up position. Takes 30 seconds to install.	This version is a one-piece part that engages into the latch socket and supports the air diverter on the outsides of the camera mount. This version is easy to insert and remove, but probably will not be your permanent fix due to the fact that it relies on the weight of your device to keep it locked in, and may be more unstable than the block version. We do not provide this type with any orders – if you want it, you must print your own
